Extent matters

Using fMRI to determine the presence of actual cortical reorganization following ocular or cortical lesions requires being aware of many potential pitfalls. In a recent paper in the journal “Neuroimage”, Gokul Prabhakaran and co-authors report on one more such an issue: for the cortical projection zone of the fovea, the estimated size of neuronal population receptive fields depend on the extent of the stimulated visual field. Hard to predict, yet very relevant to know. Gokul did part of the analyses presented in this paper together with Joana Carvalho and Azzurra Invernizzi while on his NextGenVis secondment in our lab.
