I am a Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher in the European Glaucoma Research Training Program (EGRET) and I am carrying out my Ph.D. project working at the Laboratory of Experimental Ophthalmology at the University Medical Center Groningen. I am interested in understanding the causes of glaucoma, with potential repercussions for treatment. Specifically I study whether this disease is restricted to the eye alone or it does extend to also affect the brain. In my research I use resting-state (RS) fMRI and eye-tracking data to examine and compare the integrity of the visual cortex in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and normal-tension (NTG) glaucoma patients. In particular, I focus on the investigation of neurodegeneration of the brain beyond what can be explained on the basis of propagated retinal and optic nerve damage.
